Shamanic Trance Intensive

As a shamanic practitioner, I wish to understand trance and look to history for inspiration.  I look towards those ancestors who lived before agriculture, the hunter gatherers.  A time when shamanism was synonymous with everyday life.  For thousands and thousands of years, humans have appreciated that there’s another state, another experience available within the human sphere, beyond our physical expression, and it happens during trance.

Trance is a part of our lives even today, but we rationalise it as something ‘other’.  To our forebears  it was as real as what we call ‘normal’ everyday life.  They saw how powerful this state of consciousness is, they understood the possibilities and embraced it.

I’m especially interested in learning how to intensify the trance state in today’s world without the aid of hallucinogens.  I’ve realised there are numerous ways we can go deep into trance, especially when we layer the methods.

Breathing is a hugely fundamental tool, as is repetitive percussive sound at about four beats per second.  These are my usual techniques when I’m doing shamanic work.  Another layer is sensory deprivation, wearing gear that renders us unable to see or hear.  Of course, if we are free-floating in a large tank of salt water in the dark, that’s going to do it, but that’s too impractical for the most part, so I’ll give that a miss since my bath isn’t big enough.

The shamanic trance intensive retreat kicks off with a vision quest, a powerful way to induce trance in itself.  One of the ways it does this is to induce a state of fear.  The idea is spending anything from a night to five days and nights alone, without human contact, with little or no food and only water to drink, with no comforts and staying awake the whole time, in a state of meditation and contemplation.  Staying with ourselves.  And that’s the scariest bit, having nothing to distract us from ourselves.  We live in a world where there’s so much to fill us up so that we’re not having to be with ourselves, TV, radio, music, books, phone, computer, social life, activities, food, alcohol.  We keep ourselves engaged to avoid having too much emptiness when who-knows-what can emerge from within us.  Vision quest is all about being with ourselves good and proper.  And that’s something that can take us into trance.  Some crazy things happened to me on my first vision quest, things like hearing the rain make melodious music and feeling a lot of presences with me.

Sweatlodge is all about breathing and heat and fire.  Sweatlodge is ceremonial.  Ritual and ceremony are also trance-inducing through the power of repetition, focus and  building the intensity of the energy.  Sweatlodge is a purifying experience but also brings us into a deeper state of consciousness.  Like vision quest, sweatlodge induces increased levels of fear because it can be difficult to breathe and manage the heat and one can feel trapped in a small space.  The heat can be challenging and along with possible dehydration, it’s easy to find oneself becoming dizzy and light-headed.  Trance-invoking percussive sound and chanting are also used during sweatlodge.

Trance dancing and drumming in a repetitive rhythm around a fire is a powerful experience, especially at night.  Group shamanic trance dances always induce deep and profound trance states and are ideal for undergoing shamanic journeys.

Finally, I’m learning currently about postures and what they contribute towards shamanic trance experience.  It was back in 2018 at a London workshop that I first found myself working with movement during meditations, activations and journeys.  I’ve found correlations from a number of sources that endorse either body movements or postures during meditation or journeying to create a potent focus and energetic alignment for a particular purpose.  This work can create powerful and intensive trance states and I intend to write a more detailed post on the subject in the future.

The intention of trance is to achieve as deep a state of consciousness as possible, in order to open oneself up to the non-physical world.  In doing so, it’s possible to really boost one’s capacity to experience otherworld reality and beings.  An even stronger connection with ones’ spirit guides is reached.  That’s why the trance intensive retreat spends several days creating deep trance states, so that participants can intensify their connection with elemental and nature beings such as tree and plant spirits, landscape guardians and the energies of earth, air, fire and water.  These beings don’t exist at a physical level and therefore we can’t communicate with them that way.  They exist at the emotional energy level and by inducing a non-physical energy stance, we are able to experience and communicate with these and other beings.  Nature beings and elementals are teachers and have gifts to give.  Where plants are concerned, this is paramount for healing.  Where elementals are concerned this is a way to achieve healing, balance and harmony for humanity and planet Earth.

A Sacred Grove

Yesterday, I set off from my home on foot to walk up my mountain and there I found what I’ve been looking for ever since I moved to this locality six months ago.  I found my sacred place in nature where my own special tree was waiting for me.

I finally reached a place I’ve been meaning to go.  It’s an old quarry, a sunken world, now totally reclaimed by nature.  More than that, it has become nature’s temple.

This sacred grove is isolated, on private land that I have unrestricted access to, it sits far away from paths or human places.  It is left entirely in peace.  It’s a wet, soggy hollow with woods of oak, willow and hazel, some birch on the higher slopes.  On one side hangs a high cliff-face of earth and greenery.  It abounds with bracken and bramble, ferns and moss.  There are sparkly drusy quartz-covered stones, glinting in the undergrowth, bedrock long since quarried and abandoned.  Corvids hold court here, the jackdaws, rooks, crows and majestic ravens are all around, calling and swooping through the woods.  Also in attendance are robins, blackbirds and little jenny wrens.

It was exciting when I finally came upon the narrow entranceway that led down into the wide amphitheatre of lush green mystery.  Three oaks called to me as I passed, on each I saw the face of its accompanying tree spirit.  I knew the moment I approached the third oak that this is the one that’s been waiting for me.  All the trees are bedecked from head to toe in moss, a veritable green world, this is.

Having formally approached up to the edge of the canopy, I asked permission of the oak to draw near.  I placed my hands on the broad trunk and bent my forehead to the bark, giving my name and asking the tree for his, which was received.  I sent my love to this tree, and through it, to the great oak consciousness.  Then, I sat at the foot with my back to the trunk and opened myself to the energy of nature, but not before opening my mouth and throat to sing of my power from the depth of my lungs.  As shamanka, my song lets the spirits of this sacred place see me, know me and feel my authenticity, integrity and power. I am demonstrating my right to be here. My raw notes rang out loudly, echoing through the grove, unheard by human, but a wind appeared from nowhere and met my song, letting a shower of oak leaves fall with each piercing note, ceasing to stillness only as the last note trailed away.

Eventually, I moved further down the wide corridor of the grove into further wetness until I reached the opposite end.  Thank goodness I wore my wellies.  From there, I climbed up to find the sky and summit as I tried to find a shorter way home, but it was not to be.  All in all, I was up on the mountain for just short of five glorious hours yesterday.  Now, I sit cosy in my little tree house, knowing my sacred grove and beloved oak tree await me for another day and another adventure.

Welcoming The Goddess Energies

Recently, I’ve entered into training with the Fellowship of Isis, Goddess training that will take me a year to complete, so I predict some majorly Goddess inspired posts appearing from time to time.

And indeed, even though the course itself doesn’t start until July, I have already entered into conversation and exploration with fellow students about the goddess energies.

And that got me pondering about the way the Goddess vibe has really never not been in my life.  I can’t speak for the cradle, but from being a little girl I had the deepest relationship with this energy that was both the land and also a kind of body-less consciousness of a feminine nature.

This was my most nurturing relationship throughout childhood. I had a difficult childhood and the active emotional response I experienced towards my adopted mother was fear. My sense of self was soon diminished in early life, well before the age of seven, and I didn’t make friends. So, taking the family dog walking in my wild backyard twice a day was my salvation. That time with the dog and the land saved me. I connected to this loving, gentle energy that I eventually identified as Mother Earth. She was everywhere but most of all, she was felt when I was in the landscape, on my own, with or without the dog. Then, I felt loved and held. And rooted and free.

So, it’s not surprising that the Goddess has been a huge focus throughout my adult life. My mother may have invoked fear but she also modelled how empowered women can be. Nobody was more powerful than she was in our family, in my little girl world.

It’s understandable that we pick up our ideas of Goddess and God from early relationships with our personal mother-figure and father-figure, whoever they are.

The Goddess vibration is a consciousness, one that splits into a myriad of facets. And I do believe that there are women who walked on Earth in physical bodies, women who embodied feminine divine energy and eventually came to hold the vibration of the Goddess Consciousness in their being. They now exist in the energetic world as Goddess beings. I speak of Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, Lady Quan Yin, to name but a few.

I take this understanding to the myths and legends, and I am a mythology nerd. There, Goddesses abound. Not only Greek and Roman pantheons, but Norse, Celtic, Hindu, Native American, you can go anywhere and find Goddesses. There are many stories that represent her and yet, do not name her, like Sleeping Beauty, Snow White. She is everywhere. All these are her many aspects, her qualities and energies.

The more I explore the Goddess energies, the more is revealed and yet, I’ll never get to the bottom of it all. And, of course I won’t, I never could. That’s as it should be. There’s a point when you’ve just got to stop trying to understand and simply absorb all that you are given to hold.

But what I’ve come to pondering is why am I splitting the divine into Goddess and God, when we are embracing oneness? Why am I focusing on the Goddess now? What does that do to my relationship with the Creator? Which is paramount to me.

The Goddess Consciousness is the embodiment of the divine feminine, which is rising now towards unity, and the Creator is the embodiment of all-that-is, the embodiment of oneness. How do I reflect the divine feminine and divine masculine within me?

What’s your relationship with the Goddess like? Do you see past the personality of ‘Goddess’? Do you sense the energy, vibration, the consciousness of the divine feminine? Do you find the Goddess within you?

The Goddess and The Wheel

The Goddess is complex and has many faces.  The ones most talked about are Maiden, Mother and Crone.  Personally, I see the Goddess in the turning of the Wheel of the Year and assign three moons to each Goddess aspect on the cycle, making four.  Maiden, Mother, Crone and one more.  I call this fourth face Bride, sometimes, she is the Sorceress.  The energy feels like this:

The first face is the Maiden, the story of divine feminine starts with her.
She is Sleeping Beauty or Snow White.
She’s a Winter’s landscape, like the land beneath snow.
She is waiting to grow into her power.
The acorn waits in the dark earth for the Spring sun to kiss it awake.
The acorn grows into the oak just as the Maiden grows into Bride, Mother and Crone.
Her womb is waiting to bleed.
The Maiden sits in the season of Winter on the Wheel of the Year, for she is first.
And the Celtic New Year begins at Samhain, last day of October.
Winter precedes all other seasons, just as the dark void gave birth to light.
Everything starts in the dark, as the baby is born from the dark womb.
The elemental energy of the Maiden is Air, for hers is the first breath.
She is assigned the moons of November, December and January.

We are now at Imbolc, last day of January.
The season when light returns and the earth wakes from slumber.
Powerful season of Fire and renewal.
The sun has kissed the Maiden and she has woken up.
Everything is stirring in nature, in her season.
The birds and beasts are mating and trees and plants are thrusting out their leaves.
Here sits the Bride, assigned three moons of February, March and April.
She is the May Queen whose potent, fiery blood brings transformation at Beltane.
Just as Spring transforms the land.
She is red and white, purity and blood, for her womb is fertile and not yet pierced.
She is the Enchantress.

The Goddess energy passes on at Beltane.
When the womb of the May Queen is pricked.
Life is growing within her dark womb.
The season of the Great Mother Goddess is here.
Divine Mother rules the moons of May, June and July.
She reigns through Summer, season of abundance and blessings.
She is the cornucopia of plenty.
She births the land as the magical child, the seed of humanity.
She reigns until July’s end, whence comes the festival of Lughnasadh.
Festival of the Child of Light, which is us, dear listener.
For we, and all beings upon the Earth are her children.
The earth is rich with flowers, corn and fruit during the season of the Great Mother.
The element of Earth is her gift to us.

At August’s start, power passes to the Crone.
Wise Woman, she is Elder.
She, who is Keeper of the Wheel of the Year.
Turner of the wheel.
She oversees the process of change.
She sits at the spinning wheel with the silver thread in her fingers.
Her element is Water, for water is a record keeper, as is the Crone.
To her are assigned three moons of August, September and October.
Her womb is not barren, it is the void.
Cave of inconceivable power.
It is the gaping gash of Sheela Na Gig.
She beckons us to enter.
To go inside ourselves and know who we are.
She sits in the season of the ancestors.
At Samhain, the ancestors are honoured.
And the Crone passes her power back to the Maiden.
The wheel begins again, not a circle but a spiral.

For this reason, as a woman in her Crone stage, it is mine to gift my power to the Maiden, imparting wisdom and teaching skills to one who is starting on the same journey I have travelled.  Already, the honour and opportunity has befallen me, more than once, in teaching my shamanic craft.  I hope that all women in their crone-years, the years we call peri-menopause, menopause and beyond, will gift some of their power to the Maiden, for she is a Bride-, a Mother-, a Crone-in-becoming.

We Crones are the ones who have travelled the full stretch of the road and passed through all four stations.  We are in our full power.  And if we don’t value that, if we don’t honour ourselves for all we are, who will?

The Elemental Kingdom Speak of Abundance

“We are here bringing through the love of our united countenance, which is beyond all that is known through the medium of a physical Earthly existence.  We are delighted to be present, we are energies that wish to be expressed and we are the consciousness in nature, known to you as the Elemental Kingdom.

And this is a time of great abundance.  The energies of abundance are all around you.  And we wish to bring your attention to the process of drawing those energies from nature into your being, for you are abundance, you are a living part of all that is the Earth, of all that is upon the Earth.  You are the beloved children of Mother Earth, and your heritage, your inheritance upon the Earth is to express and create from a place of richness, diversity, beauty and abundance.

Those qualities exist always within your being, they are who you are, they are every cell of your being.  And yet, it is the case that many upon the Earth do not recognise this, do not embrace and embody this truth.  When you are with nature, a rich, diverse and abundant nature, such as is experienced in the Springtime when there is such growth, the separateness that you perceive which is not the truth of you, or of nature, prevents you from knowing that this is who you are too.

And you may easily gather this energy into your being simply by sitting under the warm sun, the cool breeze, the rain, the clouds, the frosts, the storms, the pleasant sunny days, in the fields, the hills, the mountains.  In the valleys, the woods, the beaches.  Upon the rocks, the earth, upon the grasses, the flowers, under trees, with your feet in streams, or pools or the sea.  In any place of nature, you may draw into your being, through your breathing and intent, abundance, the energies of our abundance in nature, to enliven the abundance that you already are, that exists in every cell of your being, for it is your truth.  To enliven that truth.  To ignite and activate that truth through our energies, for this is our love expressed to you, this is our gift to you.  Let it be received.”

Standing As Earth Invocation

Blessings and greetings from this Earth-soul to all Earth-souls.

Between the 14th of January and the 13th of February, I am one of many ‘Standing as Earth’, participating in a social media experiment that explores what it means to create from, speak and stand as something that is bigger than my individual self in this time of shift and renewal.

We are exploring how the medium of social media can support the emergence of creating something beyond our personal self but still be personal, subverting the personality and ego traps that we are all susceptible to in using Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and instead using them to stand and speak as the Earth in this time of planetary initiation.

I am excited to be involved in the experiment because I am an advocate for unity consciousness and this is an opportunity to see something beautiful and creative unfold towards that actuality, in a big, bold and concrete way.  For myself, I see our journey taking us all to a place of such oneness, such unity, that we are one with not only the Earth but the Cosmos and thus, Divine Presence.  I look forward to the day when all the people on Facebook and Instagram are identifying as ‘Divine Presence’ with a personal photo of a blazing light or field of white.  A day when we see each other’s divinity before all else, when we feel and sense the divinity within ourselves as our place from which we feel, think, speak and act in all matters.

Beloved Mother Earth already knows this place of divinity within, so do we and we are remembering to find it inside ourselves again now.  By embracing our beloved Mother Earth in unity, we are opening up to our truth and our greatest expression of being.

I would like to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to those who have been the fertile place where this experiment took root, thank you for keeping it safe and enabling it to grow into the beautiful blossoming creation it is now and will become.

Thank you to every soul who is standing beside me in this experiment.  We are one and unconditional love flows freely between us all.  What we are building here is greater and more powerful than the most destructive weapon humanity ever tried to build.  This is what power is for, the power of love and unity.  Nothing can stand against us when we are all standing as Earth.

My Love For The Land That Loved Me Back

I opened my heart and this poured out. It’s about the place where I grew up, Gower Peninsular, South Wales, UK:

“Beloved Mother Earth, I speak of one place upon your Earth, a place of my heart, where my roots first extended, first connected to your energy and found the underworld, found the rich gift of your beauty and love.

Beloved Mother Earth, I give my love and gratitude in unbound quantities to all the energies and consciousness that is the Gower, especially my beloved Pennard.

My heart is full, for there is pure magic in this earth that extends beyond time and expresses in more than one place. It is like a spiral or mobius loop, connecting across infinities and eternities, through many incarnations, for the same energy permeates my soul and the soul of the land.

Beloved Mother Earth, I was nurtured as a babe at your breast in this beautiful place of magic and enchantment, a place of the elements; the depth and richness of earth and safe limbs of that one mighty tree whose loving presence cradled us all through childhood. The salty blessings of baptism in sacred water, sea and stream, rain and dew. The cold slap of the harsh coastal wind and soft, caressing breeze in the meadows. The heat of childhood summers, warmth of stone and rock upon bare skin. The igniting of fire from dry wood, gifted by the trees. Glowing rosy cheeks, dark nights with flames dancing.

All the elements together create divine magic. A tangible awareness of elementals who creatively express their love, their devotion to Mother Earth through movements which are dancing orchestrations, weaving the light in and out and around and through, turning the energy upside down to flip it from one world to the next, the causal world of dark shadows where I feel so at home, in cavern and rocky cave, knowing, as I do, the ancient tales of this land. Tales that were told by our ancestors through lips and tongue alone, long before words were ever written down. With a power of incantation beyond which many are aware. When spoken well, then mystical creatures are unleashed upon the dark night and the deep glade.

Beloved Gower, home of Bendigeidfran, Manawydan, and their mother, Penardun, whose name means ‘sovereign’, great goddess and wife of Llyr, the great god of the sea. The dark and the light. These were the times of the tribes of dark. Still, their presence haunts the woodland dells in Gower’s sacred lands, and ancient ancestral places such as Cat Hole, Goat Hole, Giant’s Grave and Arthur’s Stone. There are the echoes of those distant times before the elementals drew away behind the misty veil, when humans first expressed ego more than soul.

Beloved Mother, we, your children, are coming home. The land is our home, you are our home. And love is our path. And I don’t need to be in the Gower to stay connected to my roots and heart, for they’re everywhere, and yet, it is that place that brought this babe to your breast when I was but a child, I felt you and knew you. My only true mother, the land that loved me back.”

The photo above is of a beach on the Gower that becomes two beaches when the tide comes in; Pobbles Bay and Three Cliffs Bay. This place was my daily playground when I was a child up to the age of fourteen. A short walk from my house over the rugged links, past the water tower and ruined Pennard castle to the stepping stones and onto the beach. This place is where I stand, to this day, arms outstretched and shout, “I belong here!”
