Shamanic Trance Intensive

As a shamanic practitioner, I wish to understand trance and look to history for inspiration.  I look towards those ancestors who lived before agriculture, the hunter gatherers.  A time when shamanism was synonymous with everyday life.  For thousands and thousands of years, humans have appreciated that there’s another state, another experience available within the human sphere, beyond our physical expression, and it happens during trance.

Trance is a part of our lives even today, but we rationalise it as something ‘other’.  To our forebears  it was as real as what we call ‘normal’ everyday life.  They saw how powerful this state of consciousness is, they understood the possibilities and embraced it.

I’m especially interested in learning how to intensify the trance state in today’s world without the aid of hallucinogens.  I’ve realised there are numerous ways we can go deep into trance, especially when we layer the methods.

Breathing is a hugely fundamental tool, as is repetitive percussive sound at about four beats per second.  These are my usual techniques when I’m doing shamanic work.  Another layer is sensory deprivation, wearing gear that renders us unable to see or hear.  Of course, if we are free-floating in a large tank of salt water in the dark, that’s going to do it, but that’s too impractical for the most part, so I’ll give that a miss since my bath isn’t big enough.

The shamanic trance intensive retreat kicks off with a vision quest, a powerful way to induce trance in itself.  One of the ways it does this is to induce a state of fear.  The idea is spending anything from a night to five days and nights alone, without human contact, with little or no food and only water to drink, with no comforts and staying awake the whole time, in a state of meditation and contemplation.  Staying with ourselves.  And that’s the scariest bit, having nothing to distract us from ourselves.  We live in a world where there’s so much to fill us up so that we’re not having to be with ourselves, TV, radio, music, books, phone, computer, social life, activities, food, alcohol.  We keep ourselves engaged to avoid having too much emptiness when who-knows-what can emerge from within us.  Vision quest is all about being with ourselves good and proper.  And that’s something that can take us into trance.  Some crazy things happened to me on my first vision quest, things like hearing the rain make melodious music and feeling a lot of presences with me.

Sweatlodge is all about breathing and heat and fire.  Sweatlodge is ceremonial.  Ritual and ceremony are also trance-inducing through the power of repetition, focus and  building the intensity of the energy.  Sweatlodge is a purifying experience but also brings us into a deeper state of consciousness.  Like vision quest, sweatlodge induces increased levels of fear because it can be difficult to breathe and manage the heat and one can feel trapped in a small space.  The heat can be challenging and along with possible dehydration, it’s easy to find oneself becoming dizzy and light-headed.  Trance-invoking percussive sound and chanting are also used during sweatlodge.

Trance dancing and drumming in a repetitive rhythm around a fire is a powerful experience, especially at night.  Group shamanic trance dances always induce deep and profound trance states and are ideal for undergoing shamanic journeys.

Finally, I’m learning currently about postures and what they contribute towards shamanic trance experience.  It was back in 2018 at a London workshop that I first found myself working with movement during meditations, activations and journeys.  I’ve found correlations from a number of sources that endorse either body movements or postures during meditation or journeying to create a potent focus and energetic alignment for a particular purpose.  This work can create powerful and intensive trance states and I intend to write a more detailed post on the subject in the future.

The intention of trance is to achieve as deep a state of consciousness as possible, in order to open oneself up to the non-physical world.  In doing so, it’s possible to really boost one’s capacity to experience otherworld reality and beings.  An even stronger connection with ones’ spirit guides is reached.  That’s why the trance intensive retreat spends several days creating deep trance states, so that participants can intensify their connection with elemental and nature beings such as tree and plant spirits, landscape guardians and the energies of earth, air, fire and water.  These beings don’t exist at a physical level and therefore we can’t communicate with them that way.  They exist at the emotional energy level and by inducing a non-physical energy stance, we are able to experience and communicate with these and other beings.  Nature beings and elementals are teachers and have gifts to give.  Where plants are concerned, this is paramount for healing.  Where elementals are concerned this is a way to achieve healing, balance and harmony for humanity and planet Earth.

A Sacred Grove

Yesterday, I set off from my home on foot to walk up my mountain and there I found what I’ve been looking for ever since I moved to this locality six months ago.  I found my sacred place in nature where my own special tree was waiting for me.

I finally reached a place I’ve been meaning to go.  It’s an old quarry, a sunken world, now totally reclaimed by nature.  More than that, it has become nature’s temple.

This sacred grove is isolated, on private land that I have unrestricted access to, it sits far away from paths or human places.  It is left entirely in peace.  It’s a wet, soggy hollow with woods of oak, willow and hazel, some birch on the higher slopes.  On one side hangs a high cliff-face of earth and greenery.  It abounds with bracken and bramble, ferns and moss.  There are sparkly drusy quartz-covered stones, glinting in the undergrowth, bedrock long since quarried and abandoned.  Corvids hold court here, the jackdaws, rooks, crows and majestic ravens are all around, calling and swooping through the woods.  Also in attendance are robins, blackbirds and little jenny wrens.

It was exciting when I finally came upon the narrow entranceway that led down into the wide amphitheatre of lush green mystery.  Three oaks called to me as I passed, on each I saw the face of its accompanying tree spirit.  I knew the moment I approached the third oak that this is the one that’s been waiting for me.  All the trees are bedecked from head to toe in moss, a veritable green world, this is.

Having formally approached up to the edge of the canopy, I asked permission of the oak to draw near.  I placed my hands on the broad trunk and bent my forehead to the bark, giving my name and asking the tree for his, which was received.  I sent my love to this tree, and through it, to the great oak consciousness.  Then, I sat at the foot with my back to the trunk and opened myself to the energy of nature, but not before opening my mouth and throat to sing of my power from the depth of my lungs.  As shamanka, my song lets the spirits of this sacred place see me, know me and feel my authenticity, integrity and power. I am demonstrating my right to be here. My raw notes rang out loudly, echoing through the grove, unheard by human, but a wind appeared from nowhere and met my song, letting a shower of oak leaves fall with each piercing note, ceasing to stillness only as the last note trailed away.

Eventually, I moved further down the wide corridor of the grove into further wetness until I reached the opposite end.  Thank goodness I wore my wellies.  From there, I climbed up to find the sky and summit as I tried to find a shorter way home, but it was not to be.  All in all, I was up on the mountain for just short of five glorious hours yesterday.  Now, I sit cosy in my little tree house, knowing my sacred grove and beloved oak tree await me for another day and another adventure.

The Truth of Ascension

Not for the first time, I’d like to take a look at what is meant by the term ‘ascension’. It’s a big word and I think people have a variety of ideas about what is meant by it.

First, it helps to hold the concept of oneness in mind. It might not look like it from this Earthly perspective, but everything is one. There really is no separation and it’s true that we are, therefore, all ascending together.

Yes, not only are you and I ascending, but so are all beings on the Earth; humans, animals, insects, plants, tree spirits, nature beings, elementals, all that is of the Earth, seen and unseen, including, of course, Mother Earth herself.

And that’s not all, oneness includes all that is not of the Earth. Also ascending are all the star beings, archangels and angels, ascended masters, Goddess beings and the Creator, because we are all one.

It’s quite possible for one being to ascend in isolation, should it be on their life path, but in truth, we are all ascending all the time because ascending simply means ‘rising up’ and that refers to the increasing of our collective frequencies.

We are all connected, whatever happens to one impacts all. Even if one being ascends in isolation, it raises the vibration of us all.

So, ascension is constant, eternal and infinite. It’s like an eternal clock that is constantly moving, an energy that’s constantly expanding. And every now and again, in the timescale of the eternal, a critical moment is reached and realised.

But there is no such thing as past and future in multi-dimensional reality, and this critical moment on Earth has been, and is, expressing throughout all time, not just happening now.

We are going through a process, collectively as humanity, to bring the energies, consciousness and focus for humanity onto our oneness, not only with each other but with all-there-is. And the focusing point for all-that-is happens to be the Creator. So, oneness with the Creator, which is our truth but not yet our collective realised truth.

Due to the fact that all moments in time are happening simultaneously, the process of ascension that is playing out now is really playing out in every moment that ever happened on Earth, the world wars, the lives of Jesus, Buddha and Muhammad, the fall of Atlantis, the onset of farming, you name it, it’s all fundamentally inter-connected to this moment.

So, if collective ascension is happening now, what does it mean? What does it look like? Some people believe there are those that will make it and those that won’t, but that means there has to be a cut-off point, a moment we say, “sorry, you didn’t make it“. There is no cut-off. Some believe that, at this imaginary cut-off, those that made it will go somewhere else, heaven, paradise, the inner planes, somewhere better. Some are scared about this, after all, it sounds a lot like dying, doesn’t it? And as for making it, once again, implying a point of being unmade and made is not relevant to an ever expanding, ever unfolding energy of oneness.

You’re probably sensing where I’m going with this. These ideas are rooted in judgement and duality and are coming from the minds of those who are not yet understanding oneness. There is no better place, this is heaven and paradise. We change inside and see we are already there and always have been.

When we rise up or ascend, we naturally evolve in harmony with the ascension of the Earth and Mother Earth. On some levels nothing changes and at the same time everything changes.

What happens is we wake up to the truth of our being and gain liberation, empowerment, peace and compassion, for starters. We become what we choose because that’s what we’ve been doing all along, being what we’ve been choosing.

If there’s anything that we could be doing for our ascension, and maybe there’s not, we could be increasing the love we have for ourself. That needs to be in place before we are ready for the seed of oneness to find fertile soil in our hearts.

Colours In The Clouds: Message From the Elemental Kingdom

I was sitting on my favourite bench yesterday with my cats, Poppy and Chai. It was a beautiful sunny March day, the sky was blue with fluffy white clouds and I noticed there were some lovely pearlescent pastel colours, mainly pink-violet, seafoam green and soft yellow, visible along the edge of some of the clouds. Something I don’t remember noticing before. As I looked, it felt like a special moment and I felt called to open my channel to receive anything that was waiting to come through, this is what came forward:

“Greetings to you, beloved ones.  We are the Elemental Kingdom and we wish to extend our most heartfelt loving greetings to you.  This is a day of joy and truth, for the burgeoning life around you is filling our hearts, those of the nature beings and elemental beings, with joy and bliss.  All life upon the Earth is precious to us and fulfils the entirety of expression through every level of being.

That which is perceived through the eyes, ears, indeed, through all the senses of the human body is merely the minutest part of the whole.  In truth, there is an overlay of light energy which you are quite capable of seeing with your physical vision.  When you look at the world around you, you may sometimes notice this energy which can be perceived with eyes open or closed.  The subtlety of experiencing such energy requires practice and trust, for there is much that is perceived by humans that is dismissed as unimportant or given an inaccurate explanation.

We ask you to become aware that the colours you perceive in the clouds or the mists or shapes or lines of light that appear against the sky or across your view of nature, or around the bodies of living beings, these visual anomalies are to be noticed and trusted.  They are your psychic sight.  And as you provide your full attention and begin to open your heart to accept such experiences, becoming more aware of their occurrences, you will notice an increase in perceiving this way.  For, what your mental self dismisses tends to become unnoticed by your consciousness as you focus upon the reality that you expect to see.

So, look beyond the obvious, look at the world around you with new eyes.  See the subtleties of colour, of light and shade, see the lines of energy that are present all around you.  Notice the energy haze along the horizon of the distant hills or around the great tree before you.  Notice the light rays that stream down from above, penetrating the clouds, soft against the blue sky.  All that you perceive is as real and as meaningful, if not more so, than that which you expect to see.”

Of The Animals And More…

My story is of the hawk, of the black-winged gull, of the bite in the air. My story is accompanied with the melody of hedgerow birds, especially blackbird and robin. And the magpie defines the interplay of this story’s words in her flight.

Voices ring out across the lane. The earl grey, purple-grey misty mizzle rolls over the distant hill. The stillness is not silent because silence isn’t silent. Silence is noisier than noise sometimes, and in this moment as innocent insects glide by, there is both silence and the constant harmony of universal song.

It is winter. It is two weeks on from the shortest day of the year. I like to think it’s the beginning of summer in my optimism, for the sun is now making first steps on the long journey of return that concludes on June 21st 2021. Today is like any other winter’s day, warmer than most, drier than many, here in the land of the Cymru.

It is a still day, in a new way. It is silent, in a new way. It is alive in a new way. And when I feel deep into that energy, my skin creeps as though there is some invisible presence that only my body can perceive.

Above the hedgerow, the majestic form of the red kite is gliding over the tops of purple trees, soaring into the misty distance and I wonder, what is the story that the land is telling me today?

As the light fades, the grass in the field looks greener, a bright emerald green. There are many lives living invisibly in this landscape; hare, mice, rat, stoat, otter, hedgehog, badger, fox, deer, to name a few. They are all here in this landscape within which I sit and yet, I see them not. How many of them see me, I do not know. But they are a part of this story, for this is a story about the animals.

Did you know the animals can talk? They talk to each other and they talk to humans, the ones that are open to hear. We are, for some strange reason, worthy of their interest, despite everything we do to persecute them, dishonour them, disrespect them.

How much has humanity harmed the animals, just to think of it brings my eyes to flooding. And yet, they continue to fulfil a role of companionship, support, service, love and care towards us in so many ways, seen and unseen. Some of us are now stepping forward to connect with the animals and create a bridge of hope and healing. Some of us are bringing forth the humility of humanity to the animals, bringing them humble apologies, even though none can ever serve for what has been done, still, it must be said. And we are holding out a hand of hope and faith for a truer connection.

Some of us are doing the same for the nature beings, the tree spirits and plant energies. Some of us are working with inner planes beings that support us from other realms. All these energies are coming forward now and selectively making themselves known. Some of us decided to be of service and connect with their energies and now is the dawning of our contracts of service that were made before we were conceived in our current personalities.

These contracts are activating, they carry a contract of service for humanity and the universe, for Mother Earth and all that is. Perhaps you will be approached by the collective consciousness of animals or the collective consciousness of crystals, the collective consciousness of bees, the collective consciousness of nature beings and elemental beings, the collective consciousness of tree spirits, the collective consciousness of the angelic realm or the star beings or the Goddess consciousness.

It all comes down to one thing. We are being asked at this time to choose. To choose what we wish to awaken within our being. To choose what we wish to awaken within our reality. And to choose what we wish to awaken within the world. We are really being asked to remember what we have already chosen. We are asked now to wake up and connect to our purpose and as we do, we are coming together as one. This is unity consciousness, we are involved in nothing more than coming together in unity as one with all, recognising the unity in ourselves and everything else.

Unity is expressed through reconnecting with all the energies that exist, many of which we have denied the existence of for thousands of years, even though our ancestors had a direct communication with these energies and beings. It is time for us to rekindle those connections and bring them into the forefront of the consciousness of humanity again. To trust that we have grown up enough, as a collective here on Earth, to be responsible and humble, with enough integrity, to move through our relationships with these beings towards unity with all.

This painting depicts my dear friend, Ian Firth, who transited into the spirit realm in 2009. Generally known as The Green Man, here, he is the Rainbow Wizard at Pentre Ifan, Pembrokeshire. Find it with some of my other paintings in my sidebar gallery.

My First Story

I am one who sees, hears and feels the magic of the land.  I grew up in the bosom of the land and heard the stories that the land spoke, that the land speaks to this day.  I know that when the mist descends and the hills disappear, they have gone beyond the veil, they have shifted into another realm, a magical realm, an earthy, dark realm where I belong, for my ancestors dwell there.

The land is my mother.  She was my loving mother in childhood, even when the love of a human mother seemed to elude me, so it was that the nurture I suckled as a child came from the earth, from stone and gorse and bracken and tall grasses, from the hedgerows and the woods, the beaches, the valleys, the streams. In short, my succour came from the land.

And now I find that the land is telling me of other lives I lived, in which I heard its stories.  It has awoken me to the truth that I am a storyteller, one who holds the stories for many, a carrier of the lore.

These stories belong to the land and they belong to me, a child of the land.  They belong to all of us, they always have and always will, they are the stories of us all, for us all.  For we have lived before and known each other in many ways, we are our ancestors and descendants and we all carry within us the jewels of wisdom and kernels of truth that are hidden in the stories of the land.

I know that the stories I carry are waking up. They have a life of their own, it is as though they are living beings. They contain their own conscious awareness, they know when it is time to wake up and they know when it is time to speak. They have been sleeping, just as the maiden in the fairy tales sleeps, as though she will never wake up, but she is waking up. This is the time when all the heroes and heroines who sleep in the stories are waking up; Merlin, King Arthur, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, all waking up. The dragons are waking up and all of the magical beauty and truth that the land holds for us all is waking up. For they have only been asleep from our perspective, only been out of reach to those who cannot sense them. For some, they have remained awake and accessible. In truth, it’s not they who have been sleeping at all, it is us.

Whether you believe in magic now, you are going to believe in magic soon, when magic walks amongst us all in broad daylight, when all those myths and characters that we thought were only children’s stories turn out to be true, to be within our realm of experience, undeniable. Dwarves, goblins, trolls, faeries, giants, dragons. Like those people who refused to believe in ghosts until they had a particular experience, after which they could no longer say that they absolutely denied the existence of ghosts.

We are all magical but if we only see the reality of the physical world that is before our eyes, the world that the scientists tell us about, then, we are only scratching the surface of our own selves. We have not realised who we are, we have not looked in the mirror of truth and recognised ourselves yet.

There are those of us whose understanding of reality extends beyond the obvious, beyond the realm of the physical, extends into the dusty corners of our imaginations and to the heart of our intuition. We who have always believed in magic, even in the face of apparent evidence against. You will find that our innate inner sense of belief in the existence of this incredible realm of possibility is no longer possibility, but probability. And once it becomes a probability and we begin to have a relationship with it, then we bring it into ourselves, into our expressions of truth, into our core of being. And as we do that, what we meet there is us. Divine magic is within us, it is who we are, we are divine magic. What is outside of us is within us, what is within us is outside of us. And what we choose, becomes. And this, my friends, is my first story.

This story is accompanied with a painting I made as a commission for a poem. It’s called ‘Ancestral Blueprint’. Check out my gallery of paintings in the sidebar.
