Hummingbird Shaman

This is a picture-led post and this stunning image caught my eye. It’s a hummingbird-shaped naturally occurring ice feature discovered in a Michigan yard, photographed by Tammy Shrive, via LOCAL 12 WKRC-TV.

Then, in the usual synchronicity that the universe provides, I caught a fascinating TV programme all about hummingbirds.

There was a time when, in my shamanic practice, I called the directions using the Four Winds system. In this South American system introduced to me by Alberto Villoldo, serpent is in the south, jaguar in the west, eagle or condor in the east and hummingbird in the north.

In shamanic terms, hummingbird is connected to our awakening, our vision and the epic journey of our soul. Hummingbird brings courage and resilience and is the symbol for those whose lives are specifically focused on the journey of their soul, and I count myself as one.

Hummingbirds are migratory, spending winter in the South American rainforest, the Sonoran desert and the Andes mountains and travelling as far as the Canadian border for summer. They travel up to 23 miles a day, their heart beating 1,260 times a minute and their wings beating 15 – 80 times a second.

Across the species, they range from 5.5cm up to 13cm in length, and that includes their long beak and tail.

Living on the edge, hummingbirds exist at the very precipice that is the energetic trade-off between how much nectar they need to fuel their flight and how much flight is required to find the food. They literally dance between death and life every day.

They live at high altitudes where oxygen is thin, reaching their limit at around 43,000 feet. To achieve this, hummingbirds maximise the oxygen molecules in their bodies, which makes them uniquely equipped to live in the mountains.

Because of this, hummingbirds don’t have enough energy to sleep, they have to go beyond sleep and enter a deeper state called torpor every night, which is dangerous, another way they dance with death. Torpor means their heart rate drops from 1000 beats per minute to 70. Their nearness to death and association with a deep state of consciousness could be seen to label them as ‘little shamans’.

Hummers can fly forwards, backwards and hover in place because their wings are different to all other birds. Instead of rotating from the shoulder joint, they have a short arm and rotate on the wrist joint, giving their wings a much greater range of movement.

Their long tongue-filled beaks are not only for probing flowers but for serious aerial warfare, in the battle for flower access. They are combatant, in competition for the best feeding grounds and frequently fight to the death to protect their favoured flowering plants.

All in all, hummingbirds are pretty incredible, their fortitude and beauty are the least of the tools, skills and abilities that these ‘little shamans’ embody.

Finding Magic Every Day

When we are looking for the profound, for transformation, for momentous change or growth, awakening or enlightenment, don’t discount the simplest of experiences, events or moments.

Have you ever enjoyed a sunset or sunrise and found tears are streaming down your face?

Profound is what we get when the peace and stillness inside us connects with a special moment in the outside world.

And it can be the most mundane, everyday of things.

The trick is to learn how to master inner peace and mental stillness.

Keep engaging with the magical everyday.

Open up to the moment.

Still the mind.

Talking With Plants: The Japanese Knotweed Conversation

A while ago, I considered purchasing a house with lots of Japanese knotweed growing in the garden. I’ve heard the horror stories but don’t easily succumb to fearful talk. So, I tuned into the plant diva of Japanese knotweed to find out more.

Japanese knotweed, or JK as I came to address this incredible plant, turned out to be welcoming and forthright. Far from a destructive nightmare, JK is a high vibration, powerful healing plant consciousness, waiting to co-create with humans.

When I opened my channel to communicate, first, I offered a heartfelt apology for previously pointing out the presence of JK plants opposite my house that were subsequently poisoned. Here’s the communication I received:

“It is with delight that we hear your voice and we are accepting of the apology and learning that you have faced.  We wish to support you in changing your activities, your thinking and your attitude towards our beautiful plants.  The plant that you call JK, and we accept that name, is a plant with a great deal to offer humanity and we do understand the concerns that humanity has over the growth rate of our plant and the resilience and robustness of our plant, that is seen as resistance.  We have a role, a job to do upon the Earth.  A role of collaboration and co-creation with humanity and we wish for our voice to be heard.  We wish for persons like yourself who will make a place for us to be heard, and this is our desire.

We wish to reassure you that if you choose to make your home within this garden, it will be a beautiful place and you will find the ability to make connection, not only with ourselves but many other incredibly giving plants whose voices are waiting to be heard.  We are grateful that you have spoken to us in the way that you have, and that you have opened your heart to us, to work together, for we wish to let you know we have much to share and much to teach.  And you may find that, far from being a liability, our presence in your life may be amongst your greatest blessings, thus it is to have a garden full of our presence.  We wish to enliven you to such a possibility.  Whether or not you live at this place and use your time in the garden to connect with the nature beings and plant devas there, we are always available, we are always wishing to hear your voice and for you to hear ours.  We thank you for your true apology, we understand the difficulty that humans face with their perceived limitations concerning plants and their nature.  Let us, together, work to make changes to that attitude, for the relationship we offer has a potential energy and power to open up many peoples’ thinking about their relationship with plants and we are grateful that you have stepped forward to connect with us and to become an ambassador for us in the world.  We are the consciousness, the plant deva of the Japanese knotwood, and we offer you our love.”

Did you notice they referred to themselves as Japanese knotwood rather than knotweed?
The healing power of this edible plant is phenomenal. JK supports pain control, constipation, cramps, bloating, IBS, cancer, Lyme disease, autoimmune issues, brain injury and memory, mood disorders, wound healing, blood pressure, prevention of blood clots, respiratory and lung infections, regulating blood sugar levels and much more. Most of this is down to a couple of active elements in its make-up, resveratrol and emodin.

Young stems that grow in Spring are the edible part, tasting like sour rhubarb. JK can be eaten raw or cooked. Use as you would rhubarb, in savoury or sweet dishes. It works great with strawberries in a tart or fruit pie. Also as pickles, chutney or jams. Try it grilled, tempura style or sautéed in oil and don’t overcook it.

JK eaten raw with cream cheese and raisins

When harvesting in the wild, there are some lookalike plants you will need to avoid, so make sure you know what you’re doing. In many areas, JK is treated with strong chemicals, so ensure your source is indisputably untreated. Avoid roadsides, due to exhaust pollution. It’s not for you if you’re anaemic and it’s not good to eat too much at a time.

JK syrup and a biodegradable drinking straw made from last year’s JK stalks

When it grows again next Spring, I’m hoping to test whether chronic migraine can be added to the list of helped conditions, I’ve got a good feeling about this.

Have you ever tried opening up to communication with plants? Personally, I love connecting with the ones we unfortunately call weeds. Dandelion and nettle are encouraged in my garden, I look on them as loving and giving friends.

Wow!

What does it mean to be alive, now?

I’m having a day full of wow moments today. Even when experiencing the ‘everyday’, I’m seeing wonder where I wouldn’t previously have noticed it, wondrous moments that usually appear as the mundane.

Just now, a magpie landed on a nearby tree. I watched it, marvelling at its beauty and wondered if it was also having a wow moment or simply accepting the now. Another magpie swooped by and the one on the branch watched it, there was a kind of dance of knowing between them.

Somehow, all this seemed quite magical, amazing, like a gift of life. Like being super-aware. Like tuning in at a much deeper level. Like connecting with the magpie and the tree somehow. Maybe like if you take certain drugs and yet no drugs were taken. And I realised in that moment, nothing outside of me changed, what changed to create this incredible perception is me inside.

I also find there are times when I feel like I might cry and nothing is going on to justify it. Just a momentary welling up of emotion. At first, this concerned me because feeling tearful must mean deep sadness is trying to surface, surely? But then I noticed it wasn’t sadness, it was a kind of poignancy, even joy. A recognition of a deeper connection with life.

The take-home message is that wonder and magic are everywhere, all the time. This world we live in is paradise now, we just need to learn how to see it that way. We already are enlightened and awake. It’s just a question of a shift inside us. We let go of the expectations and agreements that deaden us to the wonder and all of a sudden, wow!

Walking in Nature

If you go into nature with a spiritual demeanour, this is how it might be done.

Call in your guides, soul and soul group.

Set your protection.

Embody love and peace throughout your being.

Move through the landscape slowly and sit down when you find a spot that draws you.

Notice everything.

Every rustle, every leaf fall, every scent, sound, feeling.

Notice, especially, every sensation of your body. Every intuitive inclination.

Notice when the breeze is busy and when it ceases. Hear the rustling leaves as they greet you.

Everything is language, everything is aware of you, talking to you.

Really understand, there is no separation.

You are communing with the invisible.

I don’t mean the birds, animals, trees, they are the mediators through which the invisible speaks.

You are in the presence of the consciousness of nature. The elemental kingdom.

So, introduce yourself and invite a reply.

You are addressing the tree spirits, plant spirits, earth, air, fire and water beings.

They don’t communicate with thoughts or words.

Yet, they perceive your body and sense your feelings.

Communicate by broadcasting your emotions and use gestures and body movements to express your intentions.

Feelings and body gestures build a bridge between us and the nature beings.

Put rational mind aside, it is no use to you here, try not to understand, only to feel.

Your Amazing Super-Sensitive Healing Hand

Our body is an amazing super-sensitive instrument in ways we don’t ordinarily notice. Think of it as a mass of minute nerve endings that can detect electrical pulses and energetic vibrations. We can’t ordinarily see or hear these impulses but if we tune in, we might learn to perceive them.

Have you ever had a feeling in your body, like a tingle up your spine, and looked around to find someone looking back?

Our body’s language is so subtle, we need to really slow down and tune in to appreciate what our body can do and how it’s designed to communicate with us.

We require a silent, undisturbed environment at a time when we are at our leisure. When you find yourself in such a space just hold out a hand and move it through the air ever so slowly. Focus on the sensations and feelings you experience. Now move it really slowly towards the back of your other hand. Feel the subtle energies around your hand creating pull and resistance. Now swap hands and repeat and you’ll find that each hand responds with a different intensity. This is one way to identify which is your prominent healing hand.

One hand will be more sensitive than the other, this may alter at different times, so test it out a few times to clarify the hand that’s your most consistent sensitive tool.

Once you know your prominent hand, go for a walk in nature and whilst you are calm and relaxed, take your awareness to your prominent hand. Become tuned into the feeling of it and it will start to display sensations that are like a radar picking up energy around you.

With practice, you can ask yourself questions and the sensations will guide you, perhaps to find a special tree or to the presence of elementals or spirits. You can also use it to identify places with high vibrations or low ones where healing is needed.

By turning your hand very slowly, you can also follow the intensity of the sensations as they guide you in a specific direction. I sometimes go on guided walks in this way, asking the elemental kingdom to show where to go. It’s a great way to find yourself in some magical places and I love using my energy hand like this especially when I’m amongst trees.

A Sacred Grove

Yesterday, I set off from my home on foot to walk up my mountain and there I found what I’ve been looking for ever since I moved to this locality six months ago.  I found my sacred place in nature where my own special tree was waiting for me.

I finally reached a place I’ve been meaning to go.  It’s an old quarry, a sunken world, now totally reclaimed by nature.  More than that, it has become nature’s temple.

This sacred grove is isolated, on private land that I have unrestricted access to, it sits far away from paths or human places.  It is left entirely in peace.  It’s a wet, soggy hollow with woods of oak, willow and hazel, some birch on the higher slopes.  On one side hangs a high cliff-face of earth and greenery.  It abounds with bracken and bramble, ferns and moss.  There are sparkly drusy quartz-covered stones, glinting in the undergrowth, bedrock long since quarried and abandoned.  Corvids hold court here, the jackdaws, rooks, crows and majestic ravens are all around, calling and swooping through the woods.  Also in attendance are robins, blackbirds and little jenny wrens.

It was exciting when I finally came upon the narrow entranceway that led down into the wide amphitheatre of lush green mystery.  Three oaks called to me as I passed, on each I saw the face of its accompanying tree spirit.  I knew the moment I approached the third oak that this is the one that’s been waiting for me.  All the trees are bedecked from head to toe in moss, a veritable green world, this is.

Having formally approached up to the edge of the canopy, I asked permission of the oak to draw near.  I placed my hands on the broad trunk and bent my forehead to the bark, giving my name and asking the tree for his, which was received.  I sent my love to this tree, and through it, to the great oak consciousness.  Then, I sat at the foot with my back to the trunk and opened myself to the energy of nature, but not before opening my mouth and throat to sing of my power from the depth of my lungs.  As shamanka, my song lets the spirits of this sacred place see me, know me and feel my authenticity, integrity and power. I am demonstrating my right to be here. My raw notes rang out loudly, echoing through the grove, unheard by human, but a wind appeared from nowhere and met my song, letting a shower of oak leaves fall with each piercing note, ceasing to stillness only as the last note trailed away.

Eventually, I moved further down the wide corridor of the grove into further wetness until I reached the opposite end.  Thank goodness I wore my wellies.  From there, I climbed up to find the sky and summit as I tried to find a shorter way home, but it was not to be.  All in all, I was up on the mountain for just short of five glorious hours yesterday.  Now, I sit cosy in my little tree house, knowing my sacred grove and beloved oak tree await me for another day and another adventure.

Granma Wisdom

“Granma, where about in the garden will I find the fire spirits?”

“Well, think about that for a moment, where about in the garden is there heat?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where’s there transformation?”

“Don’t know, Granma.”

“In the compost heap, of course!”

“Is that where they’ll be?”

“Yes!”

“Granma, what are they like?”

“Well, they don’t come across as friendly as the other elementals, not at first.  They’re very focused on their work and they don’t seem so interested in us humans as much as the others.  They move fast, faster than even the air spirits.”

“Granma, when I breathe, does an air spirit come out of my mouth?”

“Hee, hee, hee, bless you, no! What comes out is the air, air spirits are not the air, they’re the invisible beings who work with air’s energy and transform it into a higher, purer energy for us all.”

“How do they do that?”

“By movement, dancing and weaving, and by nurturing the energy and spinning it together, taking it down into the Earth and up into the highest heights, unifying it until it shines with brilliant light and love.”

“Wow, Granma, that sounds so cool!  What happens then?”

“The energy they create transforms our world into a magical world and we breathe it in.  Have you noticed that when we go for our walks, we go to some places that feel alive, full of magic and then we go to other places that feel dead or asleep?”

“Yes, Granma, you always point it out.”

“Well, where it feels so wonderful, that’s where there are lots of nature spirits getting on with their dancing and weaving and making their magic, and it’s food for our souls.  We humans need it to keep us healthy, all the animals do, everything does.  But where it feels dead or dormant, the spirits of earth, air, fire and water aren’t there anymore, or they’re there but can’t do their work.”

“Why can’t they do their work?”

“Oh, there are lots of reasons, but it’s always because humans have interfered with things.  Maybe a waterway has been blocked or diverted, a tree has had the branches it uses to direct energy across the landscape lopped off.  Maybe the hedgerows have been torn out that were creating harmony across the fields.  Most people can’t see energy like you and me, sweetie.  People don’t think about it and they do things that destroy the nature spirits’ homes and work, without realising.”

“Aw, that’s so sad, Granma.”

“Yes, it is.  That’s why we go out with the rattles and the chimes and make our chants, we’re bringing healing to those areas so the nature beings can come back.”

“I love that we do that, Granma.  When I get older, I’m going to tell everybody all about what the earth, air, water and fire spirits do when they dance and weave, so that people will understand.”

“That’s a very noble plan to have, my love.”

Message From the Elemental Kingdom & Crystalline Kingdom: 1

‘You are walking amongst our energies every day, for we are everywhere. We are the Elemental Kingdom and we speak with you today in partnership with the Crystalline Kingdom. Every act that is an act of making, all that is created by human beings, is done so in connection and collaboration with the Elemental Kingdom and the Crystalline Kingdom, for our energies are being drawn upon. The rich palette of materials available to humankind for all their expressions and creations are from the Elemental Kingdom and the Crystalline Kingdom. It is not usually recognised by humans that these elements have awareness and are consciously creating with you. Plainly, very few realise it. If humans had conscious awareness of the potential of this relationship, the consequences would be astounding, so it is important that this is not accessed by the majority until humankind is cleared of many elements of their past karma, for this knowledge was utilised at the downfall of previous human civilisations, such as at the time of Atlantis.

Human ego, human desire to replace the Creator, to be as great or greater that the divine, is a factor in that downfall. We wish humankind, therefore, to understand that they are not separate from the source, they are not separate from the divine. This is to say, you are not separate from God. Separation from the Creator has been a lie that humans have told themselves. For some, this lie manifests as a claim to power over the dominions of the Creator, which is all. For others, it is experienced as a tremendous loss and longing for reconnection with the source.

The unity of all is a difficult wisdom to reach when humans are connected to their physicality and do not embrace the multiple dimensions of their expressions as whole beings. As long as humans perceive themselves as a body and a personality primarily, and not as a soul, a light being, then they will not reach a state of unity with us and the Crystalline Kingdom, more importantly, with each other and the Creator, they will not reconnect to the divinity within themselves, they will not realise that they are fulfilled and complete right now.

Instead, they will continue to construct the inner reality of illusion that lives within the majority. So many people feel that it is almost impossible to let go of the illusory world in which they exist. It is true that it is not simple, the world in general continuously reinforces this illusion. Despite this, and in particular during these times when so much energy is coming forward to support this shift of awareness, it is the simplest act to step from the illusion into the truth of unity, of multi-dimensional expression, simply by choosing and continually choosing, in every moment and every day, when reminded of the illusion of separation, when reminded of the complication of being a physical person with a story, with a past that ties you to its illusion. Every moment, there is an opportunity to choose to let go, to be free, supreme liberation is within your grasp. The freedom to let go of your story, let go of the past that binds you to who you think you are, when all the time, you are nothing but vibration, you are nothing but light, you are nothing but love, you are nothing but divine.

Coming to embody that truth is now more possible than ever, for there are energies coursing through the Earth’s being and your being that align you to this truth the moment you choose, the moment you hold the intention to be focussed upon that truth. And even though you will continuously be pulled back to the illusion, into the fog you have been living in your entire life, the more often you bring yourself back into alignment with the light, with that truth, the sooner you will stay there. We are the Elemental Kingdom and the Crystalline Consciousness. We are waiting for humanity to awaken, for we wish to co-create in conscious awareness of your true purpose upon the Earth, to be harmoniously interacting with all that exists in the Earth’s sphere, with Mother Earth and with our energies. So be it.’

Message from Lord Vishnu Krishna: 1

This afternoon, I went to sit alone on the bench in the garden with an expanded view of the countryside to the distant hills.  Whilst there, I noticed the nettles in front of me were vibrating very fast, as though shivering.  I noticed none of the other plants, leaves or grass around me were moving.  The movement was not like the kind of thing the breeze would do and only three patches of nettles did this, the rest did not.  As I watched, I felt my awareness settle into a deep meditative state and knew it was time to open to a channelled message. As the message came through, I did not understand why I was given both Vishnu and Krishna in the name. Later, I did some research and discovered they are aspects of the same being. I am assuming the presence that came through expressed their combined energy:

‘I am Lord Vishnu Krishna and my purpose in bringing my light vibration into your dimension is to illuminate the lifeforce energy that courses through all that exists.

Beloved one, you are awake to the energies surrounding you, you feel, sense and acknowledge that which many do not perceive. It is time to extend your sensitivities to a deeper level. In order to achieve this, become still in nature. Open your heart and allow the vibrations that you perceive to be revealed to you. This may happen visually or it may be an internal experience, one of sensing, perhaps a sound, perhaps a physical sensation in the body, perhaps an inner knowing. This is the universe communicating with you, this is life expressing itself at its most fundamental level.

There is consciousness in everything, not only living creatures and humans, upon the Earth there is consciousness in everything, every rock, every plant, every cloud. Consciousness may not be as you understand it but the energy of being is conscious, nonetheless. Once divine primal expression becomes, that is, once it has manifested into a form, a substance that has unique qualities, then every part of the manifestation that exists in the universe contains the consciousness of the Creator and its own individual expression of being is recorded within it. Furthermore, certain energies such as those of plants and trees, may be partnered with a conscious energy being that you would call an elemental or nature being and their consciousness is connected to the plant as well as existing separately.

It is time to begin to sense the intelligence in plants as well as trees. It is time to understand the entirety of their expression and to embrace their beautiful natures, for they have not been treated with respect. They have been and still are abused and misunderstood, when, in fact, people would do well, for themselves and the Earth, to open their hearts and connect with the energies of all plants and trees, in order to work together with those energies, with respect and love.

So much more can be achieved with regard to healing and the many other gifts that plants bring to humanity, such as nutrition. Imagine if you woke one morning with an ache in your belly and you could simply connect with the energy of the plant consciousness in order to know how to make that ache in your belly disappear. Imagine. That is one tiny example of the creative and constructive ways humans and plants can find solutions together without destruction, working with plants in co-operation and open to their guidance. It sounds easy but many people choose to treat plants with disrespect and take what they need without consideration for the cost upon the Earth and upon the plant and tree consciousness.

The time has come to proceed differently, the time has come for the child-like behaviour of humanity to cease, it is time to take responsibility and act with honour and respect for nature in all manner of ways.  I am Lord Vishnu Krishna.  I thank you.’
